A lined butterfly valve achieves bidirectional sealing through three design elements: concentric disc alignment for uniform 360° compression, spring-energized seat for constant sealing force, and full fluoropolymer liner coverage. PTFE serves standard acids up to 180°C. PFA extends to 200°C for hot acids and chlorine.

How does a lined butterfly valve achieve bidirectional sealing

  1. The concentric disc centers on the valve centerline, distributing sealing force evenly around the circumference.

  2. The liner extends to the flange face, preventing metal exposure at joints.

  3. Spring-energized sealing elements maintain constant contact pressure, compensating for wear and thermal cycling.

  4. The no-pin disc connection eliminates internal leak paths.

Common Design Pitfalls – Why and How to Avoid

  • ⚡ Specifying PTFE above 180°C → Specify PFA for services up to 200°C.

  • ❌ Ignoring vacuum conditions → Specify locked-in liner design with dovetail grooves.

  • 📌 Overlooking permeation in chlorine service → Specify PFA with spark-tested liner integrity.

  • 💥 Using thin liners → Specify minimum 3 mm liner thickness.

Bidirectional Sealing – How the Design Works

The concentric (centerline) design positions the disc and seat on the same axis, creating uniform sealing force around the entire circumference. The disc is fully encapsulated with PFA or PTFE, eliminating metal contact with the media.

Sealing features:

  • Concentric disc alignment creates uniform 360° compression

  • Spring-energized seat maintains sealing force independent of line pressure

  • No-pin disc connection eliminates internal leak paths

  • Flexible liner design adapts to thermal expansion

A teflon butterfly valve with spring-loaded seat provides zero-leakage shutoff in both directions. An fep lined butterfly valve offers cost-effective sealing for steam and hot water up to 150°C. Lined butterfly designs with concentric discs are widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical processing.

Liner and Disc Encapsulation

Lining Material Max Temp Service
PTFE -29°C to 180°C Standard acids, caustic
PFA -29°C to 200°C Hot acids, oxidizers, chlorine
FEP -29°C to 150°C Steam, hot water

Minimum 3 mm liner thickness reduces permeation rates. Disc encapsulation prevents metal contact with media.

Spring-Energized Sealing

The seat uses spring-loaded sealing elements that maintain constant contact pressure between disc and seat, ensuring bubble-tight shutoff without relying on line pressure.

Spring sealing advantages:

  • Maintains seal pressure independent of line pressure

  • Compensates for wear and thermal expansion

  • Enables bidirectional sealing

  • Extends service life in cycling applications

Actuation and Torque Considerations

Operating torque increases with temperature for all fluoropolymers.

Actuator options:

  • Manual lever: DN 50 and smaller

  • Worm gear: DN 80 and larger, self-locking

  • Pneumatic: Remote on-off and modulating

  • Electric: Automated control with position feedback

Oversize actuators 25-30% for high-temperature operation.

Applications

Chemical processing: Sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, chlor-alkali. PFA/PTFE lining, concentric disc, spring-loaded seat.

Pharmaceutical: High-purity media, APIs. PFA lining, electropolished finish, USP Class VI seals.

Semiconductor: Wet chemicals, ultrapure water. PFA with locked-in liner, spark testing.

Water treatment: Chemical dosing, chlorine injection. PTFE lining, bidirectional sealing.

Installation and Maintenance Notes

For proper sealing performance, install the valve with the disc in the fully open position to prevent liner damage during flange bolting. Tighten flange bolts diagonally to specified torque—over-tightening distorts the liner and compromises sealing. For actuated valves, verify actuator torque matches valve requirements at maximum operating temperature. Conduct leak tests after installation and following any maintenance. Inspect the liner and disc seal surface annually; replace the liner if visible wear, scratches, or swelling appears. For applications exceeding 100°C, re-torque flange bolts after the first thermal cycle.
