A lined pneumatic diaphragm valve uses the diaphragm as the sealing element—it isolates fluid from the actuator and provides closing force against the weir. PTFE offers broad chemical resistance up to 180°C. EPDM provides elasticity up to 120°C. Composite diaphragms (PTFE facing with elastomer backing) combine chemical resistance with mechanical strength.

How to select a diaphragm material

  1. Identify media, temperature, and cycle frequency.

  2. PTFE for aggressive chemicals up to 180°C.

  3. EPDM for water, steam, mild chemicals up to 120°C.

  4. Composite (PTFE+EPDM) for both chemical resistance and flex life.

Common Design Pitfalls

  • ❗ PTFE in abrasive slurry: Particles wear through PTFE. → Specify thicker composite diaphragms.

  • ⚠️ EPDM above 120°C: Degrades and loses sealing force. → Specify PTFE or FEP.

  • 🔧 Ignoring flex cycle life: PTFE has limited flex life. → Specify modified PTFE for high-cycle applications.

  • 📐 Overlooking permeation: Small molecules migrate through PTFE. → Specify PFA or thicker diaphragms.

Diaphragm Material Options

PTFE

A diaphragm valve lined ptfe with solid PTFE diaphragm suits aggressive chemicals including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and caustic soda. PTFE operates from -29°C to 150-180°C with flex life of 100,000-250,000 cycles.

EPDM

EPDM provides good flex life and sealing elasticity. Ptfe lined diaphragm valves with EPDM backing combine chemical resistance with mechanical strength. EPDM alone suits water, steam, and mild chemicals up to 120°C.

Modified PTFE

Modified PTFE offers longer flex life than standard PTFE. A ptfe diaphragm valve with modified PTFE construction provides higher cycle life while maintaining chemical resistance. Lined diaphragm valves with modified PTFE are specified for semiconductor and pharmaceutical applications.

Composite Diaphragms

Diaphragm Type Max Temp Flex Life Typical Service
Solid PTFE 150-180°C 100k-250k cycles Aggressive chemicals
EPDM 120°C 500k-1M cycles Water, steam
PTFE+EPDM Composite 150°C 300k-500k cycles General corrosive service
Modified PTFE 180°C 500k+ cycles High-cycle, aggressive service

Liner vs Diaphragm – Two Distinct Functions

The liner protects the metal body. The diaphragm seals fluid from the bonnet and actuator. A ptfe lined diaphragm valve with PTFE liner and EPDM-backed PTFE diaphragm provides full corrosion protection. The liner is compression molded into the body. The diaphragm is replaceable without pipeline removal.

Actuation and Control

Pneumatic actuation provides remote on-off and throttling control. Spring-return fail-safe options are available. Electric actuation is specified where instrument air is unavailable.

Actuator selection:

  • Spring-return diaphragm: Standard for most services

  • Double-acting piston: Higher thrust for large sizes

  • Positioner: Required for modulating control, ±1% accuracy

  • ISO 5211 mounting: Standardized actuator installation

Applications

Chemical Processing: Strong acids, chlor-alkali. PTFE diaphragm with EPDM backing, PFA/PTFE lining.

Pharmaceutical: High-purity API. Modified PTFE diaphragm, USP Class VI.

Semiconductor: Wet chemicals, ultrapure water. Modified PTFE, high-cycle diaphragm.

Water treatment: Chemical dosing. EPDM diaphragm, PTFE lining.

Material Selection Guide

Diaphragm valve lined ptfe with PTFE diaphragm provides maximum corrosion protection up to 180°C. Ptfe lined diaphragm valves with composite diaphragms (PTFE facing + EPDM backing) offer the best balance of chemical resistance and mechanical durability. A ptfe diaphragm valve with modified PTFE construction extends cycle life for high-frequency applications. Lined diaphragm valves with PFA liners extend service to 200°C for hot acids and oxidizers. For abrasive slurry services, specify thicker diaphragms with protective backing. Select diaphragm material based on media, temperature, and cycle frequency—composite designs combine chemical resistance with flex life.

FVF PTFE Lined Diaphragm Valve With Pneumatic Actuator

  • FVF lined diaphragm valve is a valve that has its diaphragm lined with fluorine material. This type of valve is used in many applications such as sewage treatment, paper processing, mining minerals, power generation stations, steelworks, and chemical industries.
  • The rubber-lined diaphragm valve has a body made of metal or plastic but a hard and thick rubber lining is used to line the diaphragm. This makes the diaphragm and the whole rubber-lined diaphragm valve safe when handling abrasive and corrosive media. As such, the whole wetted component is protected by the rubber lining preventing hydro abrasion.
  • With combinations of strong metallic material and hard rubber lining, these rubber-lined diaphragm valves can resist corrosion and abrasion.
