A lined ball valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses a fluoropolymer lining to isolate the process medium from the metal pressure body. Its main components include the body, liner, ball, stem, seats, and packing. The stem rotates the ball 90 degrees to start or stop flow. This structure suits corrosive service because the liner reduces direct metal exposure while the body maintains pressure and mechanical strength.

How Does a Lined Ball Valve Work?

The working principle is based on ball rotation. When the ball bore aligns with the pipeline, fluid passes through the valve. After a 90-degree rotation, the solid section blocks the passage and isolates the downstream line.

In lined ball valves, the fluoropolymer layer protects wetted surfaces from chemical attack. In a floating-ball design, line pressure can push the ball toward the downstream seat, increasing sealing contact.

The main purpose is to provide corrosion isolation without manufacturing the complete pressure body from fluoropolymer. The metal shell carries mechanical loads, while the liner forms the wetted barrier.

Fluoropolymer selection changes according to service conditions. Published specifications list PTFE at -29°C to 180°C, PFA at -29°C to 200°C, and FEP at -29°C to 150°C. These limits should be checked against the complete valve specification and actual process conditions.

Lined ball valves are used in pipelines carrying corrosive chemicals and fluids that may attack unprotected metal surfaces. A ptfe lined ball valve can suit general chemical duties, while PFA configurations can address selected higher-temperature applications.

The final specification should consider the complete service envelope, including fluid properties, temperature, pressure, sealing arrangement, connection type, and maintenance conditions.
