A three-piece lined ball valve consists of a central body and two end casings, enabling inline maintenance without pipeline removal. The one-piece ball and stem construction prevents stem blowout under pressure. PTFE serves standard corrosive services up to 180°C. PFA extends to 200°C for strong oxidizers. Compression-molded liners cover all wetted surfaces, isolating metal from corrosive attack.
How does a three-piece lined ball valve achieve structural advantages
-
The central body separates from both end casings, allowing inline maintenance without pipeline removal.
-
The one-piece ball and stem design eliminates potential leak paths between separate components.
-
Full-port, floating ball construction enables bubble-tight shutoff across the entire pressure range.
-
Compression-molded fluoropolymer liner (PTFE/PFA/FEP) covers all wetted surfaces, isolating metal from corrosive attack.
Common Design Pitfalls – Why and How to Avoid
-
Two-piece valves for inline maintenance: Two-piece designs require full valve removal. → Specify three-piece construction for inline servicing.
-
Overlooking stem blowout protection: Separate stem and ball designs can separate under pressure. → Specify one-piece cast ball/stem construction.
-
Ignoring liner thickness: Thin liners allow chemical permeation. → Specify minimum 3 mm liner thickness with spark testing.
-
Using PTFE above 180°C: PTFE softens and deforms. → Specify PFA for services above 180°C.
Three-Piece Design – The Structural Advantage
The central body bolts between two end casings with O-ring seals at each joint. The central body houses the ball and stem assembly. End casings provide flange connections to the pipeline. The ball and stem are cast as a single piece, preventing the stem from being ejected by line pressure.
Structural features:
-
Three components joined by studs and nuts
-
Seal rings at each body joint
-
One-piece ball/stem eliminates splined connections
-
Full-bore design enables pipeline pigging
Liner and Sealing System
PTFE, PFA, or FEP liners cover all wetted surfaces, including the body, end casings, and ball. Compression molding creates a dense, void-free liner with uniform thickness. Herringbone PTFE stem packing provides a secondary seal against fugitive emissions.
Sealing layers:
-
Primary seal: Liner-to-ball interface (floating ball design)
-
Secondary seal: PTFE V-ring packing in the stem area
-
Body seal: O-ring between central body and end casings
A teflon lined ball valve with 3 mm liner thickness resists hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid (≤98%), and caustic soda. PFA lined ball valves extend service to 200°C for hot acids. PFA ball valve designs with locked-in liners suit full vacuum service. Ptfe lined valve construction with herringbone packing achieves zero leakage.
Lining Material Comparison
| Lining Property | PTFE | PFA | FEP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max temperature | -29°C to 180°C | -29°C to 200°C | -29°C to 150°C |
| Lining process | Compression molded | Injection/transfer molded | Injection molded |
| Typical service | Standard acids, bases | Strong oxidizers, hot acids | Steam, hot water |
Inline Maintenance – The Practical Advantage
Three-piece design allows the central body assembly to be removed while end casings remain connected. This enables:
-
Seat replacement without cutting pipe connections
-
Liner inspection without full valve removal
-
Reduced downtime for maintenance
-
Lower total cost of ownership
Actuation and Installation
Actuation options:
-
Manual lever: Standard up to DN 50
-
Worm gear: Self-locking for DN 80 and larger
-
Pneumatic: Remote on-off and modulating service
-
Electric: Automated control with position feedback
Installation: Use flanged connections per ASME B16.5 or EN 1092-1. Verify face-to-face dimensions per ASME B16.10. Provide pipe support to prevent flange misalignment.
Applications
Chemical processing: Acids, chlor-alkali, fine chemicals. PFA/PTFE lining, three-piece construction, pneumatic or gear actuation.
Pharmaceutical: High-purity media. PFA lining, electropolished finish, one-piece ball/stem, USP Class VI seals.
Semiconductor: Wet chemicals, ultrapure water. PFA with locked-in liner, spark testing at 10 kV, three-piece for maintenance.
Water treatment: Chemical dosing, chlorine injection. PTFE lining, manual or electric actuation, three-piece design.
FVF Worm Gear Operated PFA PTFE FEP Lined 3PC Ball Valve
- FVF lined ball valve has very high chemical stability, and is applicable for any other strong corrosion media except for molten alkalie and fluorine;
- FVF lined ball valve with full-bore and floating-ball structure can close the valve within the whole pressure range ensuring zero leakage, which facilitates the pipeline pigging and pipeline maintenance in the system;
- The integration of closure ball body and valve stem eliminates the possibility that the stem rushes out from pressure-containing parts due to pressure change, which ensures fundamentally the operational safety of the engineering;
- Reasonable and compact structure and minimum cavity of valve body reduce the sediment of the medium, in addition, special molding process, contributing to excellent airtight sealing surface, enables the valve to be zero leaked by combining with herringbone and annular PTFE packing;
